LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE + DESIGN + PLANNING

- » BALLARD PUBLIC LOFTS ROOFTOP & STREETSCAPE, SEATTLE, WA
- The Ballard Lofts project is a five story mixed use building which currently includes four half levels of underground parking, commercial and live-work spaces at the ground floor, and 38 dwelling units above. Barker Landscape Architects was hired to design the streetscape as well as the rooftop. The wide planting strip is designed as a linear garden, incorporating a variety of textures and colors, with an emphasis on drought tolerance. Small pockets for seating are incorporated along the sidewalks edge. Plantings respond to building use and sun exposure. Plantings near the entrance of the green market incorporate herbs and medicinal species, while those near the entrance to the courtyard incorporate species which related to shade-loving courtyard species. The rooftop includes areas of deck, gathering area, raised planter, agricultural area, green roof and an artificial turf area for dogs.
