LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE + DESIGN + PLANNING

- » LAURELHURST PARK PLAYGROUND MASTER PLAN, SEATTLE, WA
- In 2010 Barker Landscape Architects worked with Seattle Parks and the community to develop a master plan for the renovation of Laurelhurst Park Playground. Goals of the master plan included a unique, creative, safe and fun play area that saves the best aspects of the existing play area, but that enriches the space to include more tactile, natural, engaging spaces for children and adults to enjoy. The plan also strives to improve safety, accessibility and the durability of the existing and proposed playground elements. Maintenance levels must fit within the capabilities of Parks resources, and may need to be augmented with volunteer efforts. The design includes flexible and creative picnic areas, winding paths surrounding the play area and connecting to the rest of the existing path, natural play spaces with boulders and native plants. The underlying theme is water. Several items reflect the flow of water, a beach-like feeling complete with a boardwalk and possible ship structure. Natural and cultural forms could be tied together with water-inspired forms - paths, dry streambeds, meandering walls and benches.
