- » RAINIER BEACH LEARNING GARDEN, SEATTLE, WA
- In the summer of 2009, the New School Foundation and South Shore School entered into a partnership with Seattle Tilth to develop and manage the new Rainier Beach Learning Garden on the campus and to provide garden education for South Shore School students. As a result, fifty parents, students, teachers and community members worked with Barker Landscape Architects to build the garden consisting raised vegetable beds, a rain garden, a tool shed, ADA pathway, plantings, wood chip paths, material storage/staging area, composting area, worm bins, perennial edibles and a native plant garden, and a small rain catchment system –– constructed with a $5,000 construction budget and benefitted from student volunteers, volunteer contractors, material donations, salvaged lumber, recycled soil/sod, and many pro-bono design hours.
