LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE + DESIGN + PLANNING
  • » SAIL RIVER HEIGHTS, NEAH BAY, WA
  • Barker Landscape Architect teamed with Environmental works for the design and development of Sail River Longhouse Apartments, the Makah tribe’s first permanent, supportive housing. Through multiple community design charrettes, Environmental Works gained the insight needed to create this restorative space. The affordable apartments now house formerly homeless families and individuals, who are able to benefit from access to tribal health care, employment and counseling programs. The buildings form and materiality draw from traditional Coastal Salish longhouse design. The courtyard is organized around a central circle - an important symbol in Makah tribal culture. Surrounded by a covered walkway framed in cedar posts and beams, the courtyard incorporates boulders, driftwood and native plants, honoring the surrounding forestland. Native art is incorporated into benches which surround a central water feature.
