LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE + DESIGN + PLANNING
  • ยป SALVATION ARMY WHITE CENTER RAIN GARDEN, SEATTLE, WA
  • King Conservation District awarded the Environmental Coalition of South Seattle (ECOSS) a $45,000 grant to build a demonstration raingarden at the Salvation Army Seattle White Center site as part of the 2014 KCD-Seattle Community Partnership Grant Program. Barker Landscape Architects was hired to actively engage the local community in designing the new garden and outdoor learning space. The project aims to: increase knowledge of the local ecology, native plants, and how rain gardens and green storm water infrastructure features play a role in improving water quality and the environment; engage and empower diverse communities and youth throughout the entire process; and provide a natural and interactive learning space in a highly urbanized and underserved part of the city. The raingarden will be located along what is now a wide lawn strip adjacent to the building and north of its main entrance. The approved plan incorporates swaths of raingarden planting, boulders, logs, mosaic stumps, a stone inlay labyrinth gathering area and berry patches.
